ELIZABETH

Obituary

Sandra Lea "Sandy" Shears, 75, left this earth to be with Jesus, Wednesday, May 14, 2025, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born March 18, 1950, in Elizabeth, WV, to Donald "Jim" and Mary Somerville.

Sandy spent the majority of her life as a resident of Elizabeth, WV, where she was a 1968 graduate of Wirt County High School. She attended Mountain State College and worked as a legal secretary and as a small business owner. Sandy loved making pizzas and was the owner of two local restaurants in Elizabeth. For more than two decades, she has been a partial owner of Mingo Bottom Golf Course, which she purchased with her late husband, Phil. Sandy was famous around the golf course for her delicious hot dog sauce.

When she wasn't playing golf, Sandy enjoyed fishing, cooking, and spending time with family and friends. She was an active member of the Elizabeth United Methodist Church for many years and was part of the Esther Women's Circle.  She could always be counted on to make a Hershey bar cake for any dinner or event.

Sandy was also an avid music fan. She shared this love with her granddaughters who liked to test her knowledge with games of "Name that Tune". She always left them very impressed! Her family helped her mark off a bucket list item by taking her to a Rolling Stones concert in 2021.

Sandy was a woman of great faith, which helped her through her battle with cancer. Many times after her diagnosis, she would say that she knew where she was going and couldn't wait to get there. That steadfast faith brought comfort to her family and continues to do so.

She is survived by her daughter, Ashley Bland (Alan) Wanosky; granddaughters, Gillian Wanosky (Alex) Cappadona and Juliet Wanosky; stepson, Steve (Jennifer) Shears; brother, Randy (Joyce) Somerville; niece, Chelsea (Jordan) Mitchell; beloved companion, Dan Hutchinson, who helped take tremendous care of Sandy throughout her difficult battle.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald "Jim" and Mary J. Somerville; husband, Philip R. Shears; son, Aaron M. Bland; stepson, Jeffery T. Shears; brother, Ronald Somerville.

Sandy's family would like to thank Dr. Cawley and her staff as well as Jerri Rees with Housecalls Hospice for their compassionate care.
